Ship Biscuit Making Workshop
Join us for a free ship’s biscuit making activity for children of all ages.
This event offers the unique opportunity to make authentic ship's biscuits – a nod to Royal William Yard's original purpose as a victualling yard, keeping the Navy afloat with food, drink and supplies. When it was built 200 years ago, the Yard’s bakery was the biggest factory of its kind in the country, producing bread and ship's biscuits.
While these historic treats were once notorious for being infested with weevils (which sailors had to tap out before eating!), rest assured that all biscuits made this weekend will be insect free!
The activity will be delivered by the Royal William Yard Pirates Weekend team and will take place in Ocean Studios. Please arrive shortly before your session, which will last up to 30 mins - parents need to stay with their children for this activity.
During the session children will discover a little bit of history about Royal William Yard and ship’s biscuits, while being guided through the recipe and forming their own biscuits. We will not be able to cook these during the session, but we will provide containers and instructions for you to take them home to bake.
Please note this activity will involve using wheat based products. Unfortunately this activity is not suitable for anyone with allergies or intolerances to wheat/gluten.
