Dead Northern is back in the basement!

Our monthly residency at Micklegate Social returns for another evening of cult horror, independent beers and suitably sinister seasonal drinks. This November, we're celebrating two absolute classics of British horror, bringing together legendary performers, macabre humour and supernatural revenge for a double bill that'll warm your bones while the nights draw in.

Two cult classics. Two horror legends. One basement.

18.45 - 20.30: Theatre Of Blood
20.30 - 20.40 : Trailer block
20.40 - 22.15: From Beyond The Grave

THE DOUBLE BILL

FROM BEYOND THE GRAVE (1974)

Every bargain comes with a price.

Peter Cushing presides over four cautionary tales of greed, guilt and supernatural retribution in this, the final and one of the best deliciously sinister British horror anthologies from Amicus Productions.

Directed by Kevin Connor and featuring Peter Cushing as the genteel proprietor of an antique shop where every object has a story and every customer has something to hide, From Beyond the Grave weaves together four tales of greed, deception and supernatural retribution, each of which become the gateway to a different nightmare, and each reveals that some bargains are best left unmade.

With a distinguished ensemble cast including David Warner, Donald Pleasence, Ian Bannen, and Diana Dors, this atmospheric collection showcases Amicus at its most deliciously unsettling, where the everyday conceals the extraordinary, and dishonest dealings are invariably met with a most dreadful reckoning.

THEATRE OF BLOOD (1973)

The critics are in for a killer performance.

1973 was a vintage year for horror; The Exorcist, Wicker Man, Sisters, Don’t Look Now, The Legend Of Hell House and also Theatre Of Blood.
This macabre masterpiece of British horror directed by Douglas Hickox, stars Vincent Price as Edward Lionheart, a once-revered Shakespearean actor, humiliated by theatre critics, and denied the recognition he believes he deserves.

Presumed dead, Lionheart returns from the shadows to exact an exquisitely theatrical revenge upon those who humiliated him, each murder inspired, of course, by the works of William Shakespeare. Featuring a wicked performance from Price, alongside the formidable Diana Rigg, this sumptuous tale of vengeance, vanity and poetic justice marries the grandeur of Shakespearean tragedy with the gleeful excesses of classic horror.

Theatre of Blood is the perfect blend of gothic horror, black comedy and theatrical grand guignol, with ingenious set pieces, razor-sharp satire and Price's gloriously extravagant performance, the film serves up a blood-soaked love letter to the stage, and a particularly savage critique of those who presume to judge it.

A cult classic of 1970s British horror, it remains one of Price's most celebrated performances: theatrical, irreverent and utterly delicious in its macabre excess.
