Watching scenes of New Zealand and Aus has been pretty surreal for anyone living in a locked-down state these past months. Anyone who’s got a friend on the ‘other side of the pond’ has undoubtedly gaped upon their Insta account (people hugging?! Festivals in full swing?!) with an amazement akin to getting a glimpse into some parallel universe. So it is with very bated breath that those residing in England await the highly-anticipated 17th May lockdown-easing milestone.

Because, from the 17th May, England’s pubs will reopen their doors (not just their beer gardens); events of all kinds will start up again (at reduced capacity, but still); and festivals, glorious festivals, will officially become a thing that can be attended, rather than just wistfully reminisced about at every ‘Zoom drinks’.

To celebrate all of this, we’re giving big shout-outs to some really amazing events taking place this summer in England, which – alongside being great in their own right – mark the momentous occasion of things returning to some sort of ‘normal’ (fingers, toes, everything crossed). Let’s go.

Wavelength Drive-In

Dates: 16th July – 5th September 2021

Tickets: Get ‘em here

Cult classics from the cliff tops of Cornwall,’ declares the Wavelength Drive-In website – and what could sound better, really? This is a drive-in experience like no other (clearly), and promises great movies, simmering sunsets and views of the stunning Cornish coastline and Atlantic. Count us in.

1 Big Summer

Dates: 27th – 29th August 2021

Tickets: Get ‘em here

They’ve said the next decade will be coined the ‘roaring twenties’, and 1 Big Summer – with its promise of Ibiza classics and world-class artists including global superstar Deadmau5 – seems a pretty good way to kick things off, to us. The three-day event is set to take place in Plymouth, with other headliners including the legendary Frank Turner. Glowsticks, at the ready.

The Great Estate

Dates: 27th – 29th August 2021

Tickets: Get ‘em here

The Great Estate is a quirky three-day festival set in the beautiful grounds of Scorrier House in Redruth – with quirky being the operative word. Among the amazing entertainment, live music and delicious food that’s on offer, there’s a less than surreptitious Alice-In-Wonderland vibe that seeps through all aspects of this mystical, magical, and totally ‘rambunctious garden fete’.

The Godney Gathering

Dates: 16th & 17th July 2021

Tickets: Get ‘em here

Testament to how great things come in small packages – the self-confessed ‘micro festival’ that is The Godney Gathering is not to be missed. This year, it’s going from micro to medium sized (that’s from one day to two days, to you and I), in celebration of it being its tenth anniversary. The festival has hosted some massive names over the past decade, including UB40, Feeder and The Darkness, but it’s just as passionate about supporting up-and-coming talent too. Lovely.

Sausage and Cider Festival

Dates: Various dates across summer 2021

Tickets: Get ‘em here

The name of this festival almost warrants it not needing any further description (do we need to know more, really?). We will, however, say that this glorious touring event is perfect for all those who enjoy delicious grub (of the sausage variety – expect the best from Britain, Germany and beyond), exceptionally good cider, craft beer, live music and… eating contests? Get. Us. There.

From Ibiza club anthems in the sun, through to cliff-top movies, cider celebrations, and magical festival fun – we reckon this summer in England is shaping up to be the perfect way to ease out of lockdown. Let the countdown commence…
