2017 SCCTLA-Belli Seminar image

The SCCTLA Belli Seminar is moderated by Melvin Caesar Belli, son of the late "King of Torts", and Angela Storey, president of SCCTLA. In the tradition of the late Melvin Belli, the seminar is a venue for top trial lawyers, consultants, experts to share cutting-edge strategies, tactics and techniques that aim to grow your law firm. The six hour seminar is fast-paced. Each of the presenters is provided with 20 minutes to teach and share in the tradition of the late Mr. Belli.

Free drinks, courtesy of Creative Legal Funding, following the seminar and a chance to talk informally with Dr. Kris Okumu and Dr. Pamela Mehta (board-certified Orthopedic Surgeon) along with your fellow attorneys and presenters.

Featuring attorneys:

  • Doris Cheng
    • Doris Cheng is a partner in the law firm of Walkup Melodia Kelly & Schoenberger and is ranked as one of the top 50 women lawyers in Northern California. Specializing in complex injuries caused by third party negligence, Ms. Cheng has obtained multi-million dollar settlements and verdicts on behalf of disabled citizens throughout California. She is a co-author of the eminent Rutter Group California Practice Guide on Personal Injury, and the trial practice guide, Mastering the Mechanics of Civil Jury Trials.
  • Richard Alexander - Overcoming High-Speed Defense in Gas Tank Cases
    • A Dodge Caravan slammed into a stopped 1998 Mercury at 70 mph. The Mercury's gas tank erupted in flames causing full body burns to the driver and killing her granddaughter. Learn how we overcame Ford's defense of unavoidable fire due to high speed and proved the gas tank was defective.
  • Lauren Cerri - Sexual Abuse in Schools
    • In 2016, she was named Trial Lawyer of the Year by the Santa Clara County Trial Lawyers Association for her work in leading the trial team representing victims of a national day care provider. This year, Ms. Cerri was part of the legal team that settled a sex abuse case against the Morgan Hill Unified School District for $8.25 million.
  • Lori Costanzo - Why all the lawsuits for gender equality in the legal and tech fields: It's still a man's world!
    • Costanzo will provide an overview of the California Equal Pay Act which has prohibited an employer from paying its employees less than employees of the opposite sex for equal work. On October 6, 2015, Governor Brown signed the California Fair Pay Act (SB 358), which strengthened the Equal Pay Act and an update on recent lawsuits filed on the basis of gender discrimination, unequal pay, sexual harassment and failure to promote women in both the Tech and Legal fields.
  • Mike Danko - Crosswalk Accident Fatality Leads to $9.5 million Jury Verdict vs Caltrans
    • A bicyclist is hit and killed by a car while crossing El Camino in Atherton. The driver said he never saw the bicyclist. The police blamed the bicyclist for riding his bike into traffic without looking. Danko proved to a jury that the bicyclist was killed because the crosswalk was essentially invisible to oncoming motorists and that Caltrans should never have installed it.
  • Anthony L. Label
    • Mr. Label is a Veen Law Firm trial team leader and president of SFTLA. Mr. Label has been honored by SFTLA for obtaining a successful plaintiff verdict against a "zero offer" in a trial involving complicated and cutting edge issues including the exclusive remedy defense, the collateral source rule, and public entity liability.

    • Learn about new motion in limine defense tactics along with the filing of meritless motions for Summary Judgment on the off-chance that a judge may grant it.

    • Mr. Scarlett has earned some of the largest traumatic brain injury lawsuit verdicts in history on behalf of clients. He has also been named one of the leading plaintiffs' lawyers in America by Lawdragon Magazine. He will discuss the effective use of demonstrative evidence on issues of liability and damages in the mild, moderate, and severe traumatic brain injury case. Actual trial evidence will be presented.
  • Katrina Saleen - What Attorneys Can Do if They Fall Victim to False Online Reviews or Other Internet Defamation

Wattel will share his model of adding diminished value and submitting policy limit demands that often times push his cases well over policy limits.
  • Creative Legal Funding - Dr. Kris Okumu, Medical Director at the Spine Health Institute, and Dr. Pamela Mehta, discussing "Advances in Medicine Which Increase the Value of Your Case"
    • Dr. Okumu, spine orthopedic doctor, discuss the latest advancements in medicine for treating personal injury clients.
