About This Course

This is part of our Performing Improv programme, which focuses on the skills to perform improv on stage.

In this course, we'll be 'Creating Characters'.

Our focus will be on developing techniques to create rich and compelling personas – from comedic to dramatic and from naturalistic to extraordinary!

We'll delve deep into the characters – how do they feel? How do they think? Then we'll see how this can be used to supercharge your improvised scenes and stories!

At the end of the course there will be a showcase event to apply the skills you have learnt.

This course takes place on Tuesday evenings. For other course times and locations please see our main Performing Improv page.

Caitlin Campbell has been improvising since 2011: after discovering improv at university she went on to join Degrees of Error and co-devised their flagship show 'Murder, She Didn't Write'. She performs with The Adventures of the Improvised Sherlock HolmesThis Is Your Musical and The Bish Bosh Bash. Caitlin is the BIT's Artistic Director: she also writes courses for the BIT Theatre school and occasionally pulls pints behind the bar.

Steve Clements is a senior BIT instructor, and Finance Director of the Bristol Improv theatre. Stephen is a founding member of improv theatre company Degrees of Error and is both a former President and Secretary of the University of Bristol's student improv society. Stephen holds a PGCE in mathematics.
