This weeklong residency program is designed to offer you a perfect blend of structure and freedom to take your creative project to the next level.

This retreat is a fantastic combination of self-care and creative practice. We will spend the first half of the day practicing meditation, singing, and doing Catalyst Training. Catalyst Training is a 3-hour embodiment class aimed at helping you connect to your body, stretch and strengthen your muscles, learn to move gracefully, and feel into your breath. This class will meet you where you are. Neva, the creator and instructor, is incredibly good at personalizing the class to work for each participant (see quotes below). After lunch you’ll have a solid 4-5 hours of uninterrupted creative work time. In the evenings there will be an opportunity to share any work that you’ve made and receive feedback.

We believe the combination of embodied practice with art practice is incredibly potent! Once the body and mind are ready, creativity, energy, focus, and inspiration can more easily flow.

This type of focused, supportive environment is an excellent way to create art and discover new things about your body/mind. We have found that working in a contemplative space where other people are also diving into their creative practices, often supercharges creativity and focus.

We have one large indoor movement space, which we will share between artists creating dance or theater. The retreat is set on 7 acres of land over-looking the Connecticut River. So there will be plenty of outdoor spaces for moving, creating sound, or generally being inspired by nature!

Testimonial for Catalyst Training

“My experience of Catalyst Training with Neva was a full mind, body, spirit nourishing and full contact experience. Neva’s shared wild vibrant energy is truly contagious.”

—Maria Pilar Pina, Alexandria, Virginia

Who is this retreat for?

Artists.*

*(We believe everyone is an artist.)

Whether you are all curiosity without an iota of experience or you are a seasoned professional, this week offers you the opportunity to develop your skills and, without the distraction of speaking, accomplish more than you thought possible.

People with bodies.

(All people have bodies.)

This retreat is designed for artists who are looking for a supportive environment to create, and also want time in the day for meditation and embodiment practice.

The Art Monastery hosts visiting artists of all disciplines. Work spaces are available for soundmaking and for quiet, for visual art and dance/theater movement, in addition to the excellent outdoors landscape of our Vermont location.

Artistic feedback and contemplative support is available in one-on-one meetings with the Core Team, and from other participants during evening Art Shares.

Retreat Leader

Your retreat will be led by Artmonk Neva Cockrell and the Core Team of Artmonks.

NevaHeadshot

Neva Cockrell is a dancer, director, and movement instructor. She tours internationally with Pilobolus and directs new dance-theater works in the US, Dubai, and Europe with the company she co-founded, Loom Ensemble. When she isn't directing or performing, she is teaching her own movement technique, Catalyst Training, which she developed in 2016.

For more about the Retreat Leaders, please visit the Core Team page.

Where

Art Monastery Vermont, 2315 Connecticut River Road, Springfield, VT.

A truly special 7-acre farm on the banks of the Connecticut River, we will live in tents and in the 8-bedroom farmhouse. We will sit under the magical pear tree overlooking the river for morning meditation. The barn-turned-movement-space is available for movement-based practices as well as a variety of other shared and outdoor art-making spaces.
