The construction game is still the same, but you must play faster and smarter!
The priorities of our customers and the rules of the game have changed in the current economy. The good news is that the best techniques for making a profit have not!
Since 1996, the Foundation’s intensive Essentials of Project Management workshop has taught attendees that planning, common sense, standard procedures and clear communication are the keys to strong productivity and steady profits. PM’s who understand the impact of every decision they make and know when to say “No” can make all the difference between company failure and success.
Our professional trainers, led by Purdue Professor Emeritus Kirk Alter, give managers the tools they need to use on every project to keep the field workforce supplied with the equipment, materials and information they need to keep productivity and profits at maximum. Attendees learn the rules of the construction game – and how to play to win it!

The Essentials of Project Management class is a four-day, intense session where we teach attendees how to fulfill their #1 job duty : Get your projects built efficiently, profitably and professionally.
Sessions run from 8 am until 5:30 pm each day, with small group work on a case study project continuing after dinner. The days are long, but also a lot of fun and packed with practical lessons that attendees can put into use immediately when they return home.
Throughout the class, our lead instructor Kirk Alter will call out the attendees on the little things they do every single day that don’t seem like a big deal at the time, but collectively end up costing your company tens of thousands of dollars each year.
You can get a feel for the lessons covered in this class with these clips from a previous class:
• Planning Your Jobsite Materials Placement: https://youtu.be/5L9fqUIPNSo
• Impact of a Job Write Down and Cost of Unloading a Truck: https://youtu.be/L1ZChLUg5Fs
• Saying No to Accelerating a Project: https://youtu.be/U1lN9UWkRjM
Some of what we teach attendees –
• How to think through the impact of their decisions and how to manage with numbers, not feelings.
• How to use pre-planning, prefab and standardized procedures to get profitable, repeatable results.
• Why change orders are bad and how to recover ALL the costs associated with fixing someone else’s mistake (you can & should charge for lost productivity).
• Basic project finances, why cash flow & good billing are so important.
• An introduction to scheduling concepts and techniques.
It is perfect for new project managers who want to get a head-start on how to handle their projects the right way from the start and for teaching established managers better ways to do what they do every day. Our goal is to teach attendees 100 different things they can do to improve their project management process—then have them commit to actually doing the top 3-5 things that will have the greatest impact when they return to their company.
In short, our class isn’t about feel-good theory; it’s about providing PM's with the management tools they need to manage their projects with fewer headaches, better productivity and much improved profits.
