Abandon All Hope: A Personal Journey Through the History of Welsh Literature
‘I awoke from a deep sleep I had taken under the shade of a tree in a field at the outskirts of a dark wood, without remembering how I had gotten there, or, indeed, where it was exactly, I had gotten.’
So begins a most unusual odyssey, in which a writer – who bears a striking similarity to our author, Gary Raymond – allows himself to be led through the many-layered realms of Welsh literature, not by Virgil but by the late author and critic, Professor Raymond Williams.
Taking in the history of Welsh writing from the legacy of the bardic tradition to contemporary experimental works, Abandon All Hope introduces Welsh literature in a way it has never been presented before – as cutting edge, experimental, vibrant, exciting, intimate, and with a multitude of voices.
This voyage into a uniquely Welsh Inferno offers a revolutionary new way to examine and explain literary history, in a wide-ranging and, above all, highly entertaining manifesto for a new perception of Welsh literature both inside and outside of Wales. Abandon All Hope is the book that will put Welsh literature on the map and bring a rich history back to life.

Dyna sut mae taith ryfeddol yn dechrau, lle mae awdur - sy'n hynod debyg i'r awdur, Gary Raymond - yn gadael i’w hun gael ei dywys drwy fyd aml-haenog llenyddiaeth Gymreig, nid gan Virgil, ond gan y diweddar awdur a beirniad, yr Athro Raymond Williams.
Gan ymdrin â hanes llenyddiaeth Cymru, o etifeddiaeth y traddodiad barddol i waith arbrofol cyfoes, mae Abandon All Hope yn cyflwyno llenyddiaeth Cymru mewn ffordd newydd sbon - fel rhywbeth arloesol, arbrofol, bywiog, cyffrous, personol a chanddo lu o leisiau.
Mae'r daith hon i fyd Cymreig unigryw yn cynnig ffordd chwyldroadol newydd o archwilio ac esbonio hanes llenyddol, mewn maniffesto eang ei gwmpas ac, yn anad dim, hynod ddifyr, i greu darlun newydd o lenyddiaeth Cymru, yn y wlad a’r tu allan iddi. Abandon All Hope yw'r llyfr a fydd yn rhoi llenyddiaeth Cymru ar y map ac yn adfywio hanes cyfoethog.
Mae gan Gary Raymond amryw o rolau - nofelydd, dramodydd, beirniad, golygydd a darlledwr. Ef yw cyflwynydd yr Arts Show ar gyfer BBC Radio Wales a bu'n gyd-sylfaenydd Wales Arts Review, gan ei olygu am 10 mlynedd. Mae'n awdur chwe llyfr. Yr un ddiweddaraf yw Abandon All Hope: A Personal Journey Through the History of Welsh Literature
(Calon Books, 2024). Mae ei nofelau'n cynnwys For Those Who Come After
(Parthian, 2015), The Golden Orphans (Parthian, 2018), ac Angels of Cairo (Parthian, 2021). Mae hefyd yn awdur tair rhaglen ddogfen ar gyfer BBC Radio ac un ddrama am fywyd yr awdur Dorothy Edwards.
