Join us for an immersive five-class watercolor series led by the esteemed Dr. Michael Faris. This unique opportunity allows students to refine their watercolor techniques under expert guidance. Each session will feature live demonstrations and insightful critiques, offering a deep dive into the nuances of technique and composition. Students will engage in hands-on painting assignments during class, ensuring they leave with not just knowledge but practical skills to elevate their artistry.
Age Requirements 16+
Supplies Needed For This Class/Workshop
Mandatory tools and materials (students should acquire these materials prior to the first class meeting)
1. Watercolor paints in tubes (1/2 ounce size is fine. At least red, blue, and yellow)
2. Pad of watercolor paper (at least 11” x 15”)
3. Watercolor brushes (at least one good #6 brush)
4. White plastic palette with cupped areas
5. Water container (flat bowls are really good for this)
6. Paper towels
7. HB pencil or an orange colored pencil
8. Eraser
9. Drawing board or piece of flat Masonite
10. Roll of blue painter's tape
Curriculum Overview
Class 1: Mastering Watercolor Basics - Painting the Chair
- Introduction to Materials & Equipment: A comprehensive discussion on essential tools.
- Procedure Overview: Step-by-step explanation of foundational watercolor techniques.
- Live Demonstration: Explore various methods for applying watercolor paints.
- Practice Session: Hone your skills by practicing shapes and blending techniques.
- Creating a Neutrals Palette: Develop a versatile range of neutral tones.
- Assignment: Paint a chair provided by the instructor, putting your newfound skills to the test.
Class 2: Crafting a Day of the Dead Mask
- Procedure Review: Revisit key techniques to ensure a strong foundation.
- Assignment Overview: Introduction to the Day of the Dead mask project.
- In-Class Activity: Design and paint your own mask, exploring the vibrant traditions of this cultural celebration.
- Homework Assignment: Begin work on a new painting based on another reference.
Class 3: Capturing the Elegance of the Hosta
- Procedure Review: Reinforce watercolor techniques from previous sessions.
- Assignment Overview: Detailed instructions on drawing and painting a hosta plant.
- In-Class Activity: Create a botanical masterpiece, focusing on the intricate details of the hosta.
- Homework Assignment: Continue practicing with another reference painting.
Class 4: Painting Outdoor Stairs
- Procedure Review: Recap essential methods for landscape painting.
- Assignment Overview: Learn how to depict the depth and perspective of an outdoor staircase.
- In-Class Activity: Paint an outdoor stairs scene, capturing the play of light and shadow.
- Homework Assignment: Further develop your skills by working on an additional reference painting.
Class 5: Final Touches or Student Choice
- Method Review: A final review of key techniques learned throughout the series.
- Completion & Refinement: Use this session to finish your ongoing projects or explore a subject of your choice under Dr. Faris’s guidance.

Due to limited seating, we request that you cancel at least 7 days before your scheduled cohort start date. Cancellations made less than 7 days in advance of the event date will receive a 50% refund.
Courses are subject to cancellation due to low enrollment. Full refunds will be given to all students in the event this occurs.
