This 16 hour, Level 3 course is suitable for anyone working in a Forest School environment or an Outdoor environment.
Outdoor First Aid
This qualification indicates an individual can undertake the role of Outdoor First Aider in the more rural and remote areas of the British Isles where professional emergency assistance may be more than 10 minutes away.
This 16 hour Outdoor course syllabus complies with the syllabus as laid down by a range of Governing Bodies for Outdoor Sports such as:
RYA (non-commercial)
Mountain Leader
BCU (British Canoeing)

This qualification is appropriate for someone working in a Forest School environment that needs a 16-hour Outdoor First Aid qualification. It has been tailored to the Forest School environment.
These courses are aligned with the Institute of Outdoor Learning’s Statement of Good Practice for Outdoor First Aid at Band 3
Students that pass will be awarded with a 4 Minutes 16 hour Outdoor First Aid Certificate valid for 3 years. Certificates are provided in PDF form to allow easy sharing and may be printed out for framing.
It takes place 0900 - 1800hrs each day.
You may optionally add a 12 hour Ofsted / EYFS compliant Paediatric First Aid Certificate
You may optionally add a 6 hour Emergency First Aid at Work Certificate

This course has been designed to also cover the syllabus of the Paediatric First Aid qualification and students can be issued with a Forest School or Outdoor First Aid Certificate and also a Ofsted / EYFS compliant 12-hour Paediatric First Aid certificate (additional fee applies), both valid for 3 years
The requirements for Forest School first aid can be met by completing a Level 3 Award in Outdoor First Aid. However many groups prefer or require specialist and tailored training involving infants for instance, with a tailored, contextualised approach to content often mixing elements of infant/child/adult training as determined by the group. This training course is designed to provide that flexibility.
Topics include: roles & responsibilities, adult/child/infant specific treatments, dealing with collapse (with and without breathing), choking, bleeding, shock, major illnesses, torso and limb injuries, environmental effects, heat and cold injuries, using first aid kit, outdoor specific scenarios, outdoor incident management and looking after a casualty for more than 10 minutes.
This course is designed to provide outdoor incident management skills. Typical delivery methods are predominantly practical, with elements occurring out of doors in outdoor clothing and on various terrains.
Minimum age for attending is 16, however there may be specific age limits within your workplace and also you need to be 17 or over to be included in staffing ratios. Check before you Book.
Directions: Directions to the venue will be sent by email once Booking is made. There is plenty of parking at the venue, and the Taplow train station (including Elizabeth line) is a 5 minutes walk away. Bicycles may also be stored inside during the course.
Accessibility: The venue is on the ground floor and there is level access (slight ramp). Note that the car park is gravel.
Refreshments: Instant coffee, tea, squash and biscuits are provided. Please bring lunch and/or other drinks. A Tesco Superstore is 5 minutes walk away.
Syllabus
All these Learning Outcomes are geared towards an Outdoor setting.
'casualty' means Adult or Child. It also means Baby when Paediatric training is also covered.
- Understand the roles and responsibilities of the First Aider
- Be able to assess an emergency situation and prioritise what action to take
- Help a casualty who is unresponsive and breathing normally
- Assist a casualty who is experiencing a seizure
- Help a casualty who is unresponsive and not breathing normally (including agonal breathing)
- Help a casualty who is choking
- Identify when choking is mild and severe
- Administer first aid to a casualty who is choking
- Help a casualty who is bleeding
- Help a casualty who is suffering from shock caused by severe blood loss (hypovolaemic shock)
- Understand how to administer first aid to a casualty with bites, stings and minor injuries
- Help a casualty who is suffering from anaphylactic shock
- Helpa casualty who has had an electric shock
- Help a casualty who has burns or scalds
- Help a casualty who has a suspected fracture
- Help a casualty with head, neck or back injuries
- Help a casualty who is suspected of being poisoned
- Help a casualty with a foreign body in eyes, ears or nose
- Help a casualty with an eye injury
- Help a casualty with a bite or sting
- Help a casualty who is suffering from the effects of extreme heat or cold
- Help a casualty having: a diabetic emergency; an asthma attack; an allergic reaction; meningitis; and/or febrile convulsions
- Understand the role and responsibilities of the first aider (including appropriate contents of a first aid box and the need for recording accidents and incidents)
