A monthly Saturday themed workshop for exploring, practicing, deepening, and enjoying indulging in the practice of CI.
Join for 1, some or, with a great value offering, the whole series!
Dates are: 7/12/2024; 11/01/2025; 22/02/2025; 22/3/2025; 26/04/2025; 31/5/2025
- Each day will have a themed focus that we will hold dearly, earnestly, lightly and playfully, exploring in combination with fundamental CI practices, elements, and techniques
- In short 'focused jams', we'll experiment and hand it over to the dance of chance
- Bodywork will be an element of each of the sessions, enabling us to prepare, inform, and follow our curiosity about what it is to be human
- Our day will culminate with a celebratory 'free jamming' time
The venue, Harberton Parish Hall is bright, spacious, and has underfloor heating to support our enjoyment
Focus Themes will be:
7th December: movement musicality in our dance
Moving with and without musical accompaniment, we'll explore our sense of individual and co-created musicality. Beyond flow, we'll incorporate percussive rhythms, pause, lyrical phrasing, combining it all into a glorious emergent CI symphony
11th January: tuning our body to, and moving from, the range of touch senses
CI asks our bodies to tune into a wide range of touch - we'll sensitise ourselves and explore how our touch-awareness and different qualities of touch enrich our dance
22nd February: journeys through three-dimensional space
Travel provides even our most intimate dances with fresh air. Moving across a room, may provide momentum for moments of lightness, joy, and flight. The energy may also descend leading you to become grounded, earthy creatures...
22nd March: pathways to fluidity across the floor and with each other
Continuing our ‘journeys’ theme, we'll focus on how those earthy creatures may be creatures with flow and momentum, exploring how one movement contains the seed for the next, how we may meet other beings in motion, rising out of the ground, before returning to the earth
26th April: CI as living, moving art - aesthetic appreciation and composition in CI
Inspired by sculptural and artists' practices, we'll consider and delve into CI as a resource for spontaneous compositional living art or dance. We'll admire, with curiosity and wonder, the creations that manifest and are gone, like a dream
31st May: dynamic dance - playing with the spectrum of energetic possibility
from the gentlest, smallest dances to feisty, strong, yet responsive dynamic dance. We'll join this dynamic play with zooming our awareness from the smallest connection to the whole constellation, and beyond, exploring skills specifically for jamming
Asher Levin
is based in Dartington and loves being and interacting with the land and elements. He’s been practicing Contact Improvisation, physical theatre, teaching and leading workshops for a quarter-century. He's taught CI internationally since 2008. In CI, play and being, he loves the practice of trusting ourselves and others - even within the unknown, and re-seeing the known afresh for the first time. He loves old friends too. Being off-balance and free, yet focused and caring, as CI invites, is incredibly liberating and enriching. In CI, currently Asher is particularly interested in the interplay of spaciousness and intimacy, dynamic, tenderness and finding the unusual. He enjoys whole group scores and the partner or trio, within the social, physical and spiritual environment.
