With medicine's ability to keep human beings alive in unprecedented ways, a central ethical dilemma has emerged - should everyone's life be extended, at all costs? Can God keep people alive when all machines and other life-saving measures have been withdrawn? Is the medieval halachic definition of a goses (someone believed to have only 72 hours to live) still relevant in an era of life-prolonging machines and medicines? How does Jewish law factor in patient pain/suffering and/or quality of life as part of the equation in terms of medical treatment? And finally, how do we understand the sacredness and dignity of life when certain patients are alive but not functional at all in any realistic sense?

This class, marking the completion of shloshim,  is dedicated in memory of Elliott's mother Ahuva Malamet z"l (nee Slonim).

Can't attend live? If you are unable to attend but would like access to the recording after the event, please choose the 'recording only' option when booking your ticket. If you would like to make a donation to charity, Dr Malamet has requested that you consider Leket Israel (www.leket.org) or Ten Gav (tengav.org), two charities that address poverty and lack in Israel.
