The Alpine Benchmark: Domaine Jean-René Germanier with Gilles Besse

This masterclass presents one of Switzerland’s most quietly influential estates – a domaine that has helped redefine the perception of Swiss wine far beyond its borders. Founded in 1886 in the heart of Valais, Domaine Jean-René Germanier is built on more than a century of family continuity, yet its modern identity is shaped by a decisive shift toward precision, sustainability, and quality-driven viticulture.

At the centre of this evolution is Gilles Besse – originally a jazz saxophonist with no formal background in wine – who joined the family domaine at the request of his uncle, Jean-René Germanier. Since taking on winemaking responsibilities in the early 1990s, Gilles has helped lead a quiet revolution in Swiss wine, combining technical discipline with a deep respect for site expression in the Alpine vineyards of Valais.

Today, the estate is regarded as one of Switzerland’s benchmark producers, known for its clarity of fruit, purity of expression, and its ability to translate the dramatic Alpine terroir into wines of both finesse and structure.

We are delighted to welcome Gilles to help us explore the breadth of Valais through its key indigenous and noble varieties. From crystalline Alpine whites to structured, cool-climate reds, this tasting will offer a rare lens into one of Europe’s most distinctive wine regions.
