Our Saturday Cellar Series continues to shine a light on local producers, not one but two whose wines are shaped by a strong sense of place – and purpose. The afternoon begins with a behind-the-scenes hard-hat tour of our future home at 85 Spring Street - an open-for-inspection look at the site and design as the build progresses. From there, we trade construction for conversation as our host winemaker hosts a guided tasting featuring generous pours and the chance to discover new favourites.
On Saturday 22nd August, Sergio Carlei of Carlei Estate and Demetrio Zema of Zema Estate will join us to discuss the decisions, philosophies and family histories that have informed their work, each showing a selection of current and back vintages.
For Sergio Carlei, curiosity has always sat alongside tradition. Established in 1990, the eponymous estate grows fruit across multiple regions in Victoria, including the Yarra Valley and Heathcote, with the implementation of biodynamic practices at the core of its philosophy. Sergio's emphasis on understanding the vineyard produces wines that clearly speak of their context, with both French and Italian varieties planted across the cool-climate sites.
The story of Zema Estate is inseparable from Coonawarra. Since the family's arrival from Italy and the establishment of the estate in 1982, the focus has remained firmly on the region's celebrated Terra Rossa soils and the wines they can produce. At the core of the family's approach is an unwavering commitment to the region's two flagship varieties – Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon – and releasing wines, particularly their Family Selection, with extended time in bottle in order to develop complexity.
We hope you will join us for an afternoon of conversation, questions and discovery in the company of two producers who continue to contribute thoughtfully to the story of Australian wine.
