Following a memorable Prestige Champagne masterclasses with Tyson Stelzer, we turn our attention to a house that flies somewhat under the radar – despite producing Champagne of remarkable pedigree and even more remarkable value.
In a market where the grand-marque maisons command the lion’s share of attention, Veuve Fourny et Fils offers a rather different proposition: a family-owned, grower Champagne house with deep roots in the village of Vertus, whose wines have quietly found their way onto some of Melbourne’s most discerning restaurant lists.
Brothers Charles-Henry and Emmanuel Fourny are the fifth generation of the Fourny family, which has farmed and produced elegant expressions of Vertus, its home premier-cru village in the Côte des Blancs, since 1856. The family’s approach is rooted in careful farming and an unwavering attention to detail, with individual parcels – from over 40 lieux-dits across nine hectares – vinified separately to preserve the nuances of each site. The result is a collection of cuvées that are unmistakably expressive of the village: finely structured, elegantly textured wines produced with minimal intervention and devoid of unnecessary pomp or ceremony.
We invite Members to join Charles-Henry Fourny, co-owner and winemaker, at our latest Champagne masterclass exploring four vintages of the flagship Monts de Vertus cuvée, concluding with a taste of the decadently weighted, late-disgorged Cuvée R.
