There are a handful of estates in the southern hemisphere that collectors speak of with the kind of reverence usually reserved for the grands crus of Burgundy. Bass Phillip is one of them. And the fact that the property sits not in the Côte d'Or but among the cool, foggy hills of South Gippsland, in Victoria, makes it all the more extraordinary.
Phillip Jones established Bass Phillip in the early 1980s, drawn to a patch of dirt near Leongatha whose silty loam, volcanic, mineral-rich soils, moderate elevation and tempered climate bore an uncanny resemblance to the limestone slopes of Burgundy’s prime terroirs. There followed four decades of obsessive viticulture, with Phillip tending his biodynamically farmed vines by hand, keeping yields vanishingly low, and working without the machinery or marketing apparatus of Australia's more visible producers.
The results speak for themselves. Bass Phillip's Pinot Noir, in the finest vintages, belongs to a conversation that extends well beyond Australia via wines of extraordinary depth and structural finesse that age with grace. The Premium and Estate expressions are no less considered; they simply offer different windows into the same singular vision.
The year 2020 was a historic one for the Bass Phillip team, with famous Burgundian Jean-Marie Fourrier arriving to take a primary role in both the management of the vineyards and the making of the wine. With decades of experience garnered through the lenses of his family domaine and that of Henri Jayer in Vosne-Romanée, Jean-Marie brings a further dimension to an already exceptional range of wines.
We invite Members and guests to a special evening tasting a selection of vintages made by founding winemaker Phillip Jones, along with the new wave from the exacting Jean-Marie Fourrier. Hosted by Master of Wine Ned Goodwin, an active educator, wine show judge and the first MW in Japan, this is a night not to be missed.
