Wine and dine with Tuscan bastion Castello di Fonterutoli and owner Francesco Mazzei
In Tuscany’s long and proud history of winemaking, the Mazzei family stands as one of the foremost names. Through its Castello di Fonterutoli, the family has been a leading producer here for six centuries, its Chianti today supplemented by wines from Maremma, on the Tuscan coast, and Sicily.
Down the ages, the various generations of the family have left their imprint across the history of Chianti, right back to 1398 when Ser Lapo Mazzei documented the first known mention of the wine itself. In 1435, the family acquired Castello di Fonterutoli, where it still makes its wine today, while in 1773, Philip Mazzei’s friendship with Thomas Jefferson, forged after a meeting in London, led him to visit Virginia and plant vines. More recently, in the 20th Century, Lapo Mazzei played a crucial role in establishing the DOCG status for Chianti Classico.
Having produced one of the first international-style ‘SuperTuscans’ – Concerto di Fonterutoli – back in the early 1980s, before reverting to traditional Chianti Classico amid an ‘old v modern’ conflict in the 1990s, the Mazzei family today produces both iterations, including three of the new Chianti Classico Gran Selezione category, all 100% Sangiovese.
We are delighted to welcome co-owner Francesco Mazzei to the Club for a dinner and tasting exploring the history and present day of Fonterutoli via a range of its wines. We invite you to join Francesco as he details how recent developments – from the planting of a new vineyard to the installation of a new cellar designed by his sister Agnese – are driving this venerable family producer into the next era.
