Rafael Benatar // Magic and Strings (9/10-12)

Few artists bridge two distinct worlds with the elegance and power of Rafael Benatar. Born in Venezuela, Benatar is one of the smoothest, most sophisticated magicians alive, as well as an accomplished performer of early plucked instruments.

He studied the classical guitar in Caracas, and later moved to London where he became the first person to get a lute degree from the Guildall School of Music. He pursued postgraduate studies in Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque music at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Basle, Switzerland. During his musical studies he also developed a passion for magic.

Rafael eventually moved to Spain, where he currently resides, and became one of the most active members of the renowned Escuela Mágica de Madrid. He met the great Spanish masters and became a professional magician. Through his translations, and lectures for other magicians around the world in five languages, he has brought a fresh approach to magic to many countries.

Benatar’s captivating performances combine artistry with mystery and humor. Each movement is gentle and effortless. His baritone voice is honeyed with an engaging Venezuelan accent. It is clear from the moment he picks up a guitar, or a pack of playing cards, that you are in the presence of a master.

Magic and Strings is a show that combines Rafael's two lifelong passions in an intimate performance of extraordinary sleight of hand with historical musical accompaniment on a guitar built in the 1800s.

After many years of playing the lute and other ancient instruments, Benatar is revisiting the repertoire of the early 1900s with a new perspective of the past, including wonderful works by Spanish and South American composers.

Join us for a most unusual performance that celebrates both the magic of music and the music of magic.

A portion of proceeds will be donated to World Central Kitchen to help aid Venezuelan earthquake relief.
