Students in most anthropology programs are not taught how to explain the value and relevance of their discipline to their families, friends, employers, colleagues, or the general public. This webinar provides concepts, narratives, and examples which can be used by students, graduates, and instructors. We will craft some successful strategies based on specific scenarios including:

  • At a business meeting, you are asked why the organization should hire an anthropologist
  • Convincing a client of your proposed project
  • Developing a presentation for a general audience

An exercise follows related to a scenario of your choice.

This event is part of a series of workshops developed in collaboration with the Anthropology Career Readiness Network and will be facilitated by:

Riall Nolan
is Professor Emeritus of Anthropology at Purdue University, and co-chair of the Anthropology Career Readiness Network. Riall received his doctorate in Social Anthropology from Sussex University in 1975. He worked as a development anthropologist in North and West Africa, South Asia, and the Southwest Pacific until the mid-1980s. He subsequently directed international programs at a number of US universities, including the University of Pittsburgh, the University of Cincinnati, and Purdue University. He has taught numerous courses on international development and applied anthropology in the US and the UK.

Jennifer Studebaker
is a business anthropologist based in Kansas City. The owner and founder of Studebaker Consulting LLC, she specializes in process design, consumer research, facilitation, and training. Jennifer has over twelve years of research, operations, and communications experience in nonprofits and industry. She has a MS in Anthropology from Purdue University. Jennifer is also a current co-chair of the Anthropology Career Readiness Network.

Elizabeth K. Briody, Ph.D.
has been involved in cultural-change efforts for 40 years—first at General Motors Research, later through her consulting practice, Cultural Keys, and now as Co-Chair with the Anthropology Career Readiness Network which aims to improve student preparation for careers. She is Past President of the National Association for the Practice of Anthropology and served as Secretary of the American Anthropological Association. In 2020, Briody was honored by the Society for Applied Anthropology’s Bronislaw Malinowski award for lifetime achievement.
