In 2022, New Jersey passed the AAPI Curriculum Mandate requiring public schools to teach AAPI contributions, history, and heritage as part of a concerted effort to reduce prejudice and promote belonging for AAPI people, culture, and communities.

Join educators and scholars Dr. Khyati Joshi, Dr. Darrell DeTample, and Raymund Mantes at Fairleigh Dickinson University to learn how to identify and combat anti-Asian bias in the classroom and in our schools.

In this workshop, K-12 educators from all disciplines will come together to deepen their understanding of their AAPI students. Together, we will explore the multifaceted identities of the AAPI communities. Our work extends beyond generalizations as we unpack shared experiences and stories while respecting and honoring the unique narratives of individuals within this diverse group. We will also address harmful stereotypes and microaggressions, and the troubling issue of anti-Asian hate. Educators will leave with a better understanding of the AAPI students and communities and their lived experiences, and strategies for addressing microaggressions in the classrooms and overall school community; thus empowering educators to create more inclusive and culturally responsive educational spaces.

Dr. Khyati Joshi is an educator, scholar, and co-founder of the Institute for Teaching Diversity and Social Justice. She is a Professor in the School of Education at Fairleigh Dickinson University.

Dr. Darrell Detample is a high school social studies teacher, part-time lecturer at the Graduate School of Education at Rutgers University, co-founder of NJ HEART, and Teach Asian American Stories Fellow. He received his EDd from Rutgers University in 2016 with a research focus on Anti-Racism Education (ARE).

Raymund Mantes is a middle school social studies teacher, SEED leader (Seeking Educational Equity and Diversity), and Teach Asian American Stories Fellow.
