As a cornerstone offering of the Kutenai Art Therapy Institute, the Art of Art Therapy Supervision Series represents our commitment to shaping the future of art therapy supervision. This series offers a progressive professional development pathway designed for art therapists and helping professionals who wish to strengthen their supervisory practice. Whether you are preparing to supervise for the first time or are an experienced clinician seeking to deepen your approach, this series offers a comprehensive learning experience that integrates theory, experiential learning, mentorship, and reflective practice.
Led by Monica Carpendale, this series draws upon decades of experience in relational, arts-based supervision and leadership within the profession. Participants will move through a carefully designed sequence of foundational learning, advanced concepts, ongoing mentorship, and immersive experiential training, developing both the practical skills and the supervisory identity needed to support others with confidence and integrity.

Total investment is $3,885.00 - Offered for $3,000 if purchased as a bundle. All prices are in Canadian dollars (CAD).
This series is offered as a package including all components or can be purchased individually. However to register for Level Two, Small Group Mentorships, or the Two-Day Immersive on its own you are required to have an access code provided by the instructor.
Level One: Foundations of Art Therapy Supervision
Wednesdays, Oct. 7 - Nov. 4 | 3pm-6pm PST. Register by Oct 1st.
Level 1 will help you develop a relational approach to supervision, framed in an ecological context, including the seven-eyed model. Build on your skills in cultural humility and creating cultural safety in supervision. Experience a variety of strategies for arts-based supervision, including response art, post-session art and supervision art invitations. Engage using metaphor, phenomenology, art and writing directives to support the development of your professional identity and approach to supervision.
In this workshop series, you’ll get the chance to:
- develop a theoretical practice as an art therapy supervisor
- increase your skills in cultural humility and creating cultural safety in supervision
- demonstrate a relational approach to supervision, framed in an ecological context, and including the seven-eyed model.
- experience and learn strategies for arts-based supervision, including response art, post-session art and supervision art invitations.

Level Two: Advanced Art Therapy Supervision
Wednesdays, Nov. 11 - Dec. 9 | 3pm-6pm PST. Register by Nov 5th.
Level 2 builds on the teachings of Level 1 to apply the transformative aspects of a strength-based approach to supervision and positive art therapy. Together we will examine compassion fatigue, and burnout, in the context of developing resiliency. You’ll be invited to explore metaphoric and arts-based approaches to transference, counter transference, and projective identification. The goal of Level 2 is to deepen your understanding of theory in relationship to practice.

Preparation
The online workshop requires participants to have appropriate computer equipment, internet access (bandwidth) and a quiet private place to work from.
Participants are encouraged to have art materials available. This may be your preferred media and materials, or the following basic art tools and materials:
- Paper (white and coloured construction) 8 x 11 (or larger if preferred).
- Scissors and glue stick
- Drawing materials: pencils (6B, 4B, 2B HB), pastels (oil and / or chalk), felt pens.
- Paints and brushes (poster, gouache, or watercolour)
- Collage (images / words / magazines)
- Supervision journal
Small Group Consultation & Mentorship Program
Six Month Commitment - January to June 2027
Small Group Consultation & Mentorship is designed to extend learning beyond the classroom and into professional practice. Over six months, participants meet in a small, supportive cohort to deepen their supervisory skills through case consultation, reflective dialogue, response art, and mentorship.
Led by Monica Carpendale, these monthly 2.5-hour consultation sessions provide a unique opportunity to explore real supervisory experiences, receive thoughtful feedback, and strengthen confidence in navigating the complexities of supervision. Participants are encouraged to bring current questions, challenges, and successes into the group, creating a rich environment for collaborative learning and professional growth.
Available Groups - only 4 participants per group
- Group A: First Monday of each month | 9:00 AM – 11:30 AM
- Group B: First Tuesday of each month | 3:00 PM – 5:30 PM
Summer Intensive Workshop
Date TBD - Summer of 2027
The Summer Intensive Workshop is a two-day immersive learning experience designed for art therapists and helping professionals seeking to deepen their supervisory practice through experiential, relational, and arts-based learning. Set within a small cohort, this intensive provides an opportunity to step away from everyday practice and engage in meaningful reflection, creative exploration, and professional renewal.
Led by Monica Carpendale, participants will explore advanced supervision concepts through discussion, response art, experiential exercises, and collaborative dialogue. The intensive emphasizes embodied learning, inviting participants to experience supervision as both a creative and relational process while strengthening their confidence and leadership as supervisors.

Whether taken as a standalone professional development opportunity or as part of the full Art of Art Therapy Supervision Series, the Summer Intensive offers a rich, experiential entry point into advanced supervision training and a vibrant community of reflective practitioners.
Outcomes
- Level 1 and 2 = 30 hours of supervision training required for the RCAT-Supervisor application for CATA-ACAT
- Level 1 and 2 are approved supervision trainings for the ACCT
- Participants will receive a certificate of completion from KATI for each offering completed: Level 1, Level 2 and the Summer Intensive Workshop
- Participants may request supervision verification of their participation in the Small Group Consultation and Mentorship, for purposes of applying to CATA-ACAT, BCATA, OATA, CRPO, ACCT and potentially other professional associations.
Facilitator

Monica Carpendale, BFA, DVATI, BCATR, RCAT is the founder and professor emeritus of the Kutenai Art Therapy Institute in Nelson, BC. She has over 35 years of experience in education, art therapy, and supervision. Monica Carpendale holds a hermeneutic phenomenological approach to relational art therapy supervision. She holds a focus on intersectionality and cultural considerations and will introduce a variety of art and poetry invitations for arts-based supervision. Her underlying focus is strength-based while bringing an environmental awareness to art therapy practice, supervision, and education. She has presented nationally and internationally on art and poetry therapy, supervision and eco art therapy.
Monica is the author of five published books and has contributed numerous articles to the CATA Journal. Additionally, Monica has produced three documentary films and invented the Blue Heron Therapy Games.
