Abney Unearthed - Remapped, Researched, Rediscovered

Abney Unearthed is hosting an exhibition in the Harriet Delph room in Abney Park, with displays including a project overview, a brief history of Abney Park, plot maps and stories of just some of the fascinating figures who lived and worked in Hackney, helping shape the place we know now.

Haydn, the project manager is giving a talk about the exhibition and explain why the project is so vital at 1:00 pm. Questions will be welcome. Places are limited - please book your place below.

Funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Hackney Council, Abney Unearthed is an exciting project to remap the cemetery and discover more about the people buried there. A team of dedicated volunteers are adding missing information to the burial records and researching the people, bringing their diverse stories to life.

Opened in 1840, Abney Park is one of London’s ‘Magnificent Seven’ Victorian cemeteries, located in Stoke Newington. The 32 acre site is the resting place of over 200,000 people. Designated a nature reserve in 1993, it is also home to a wide variety of flora and fauna including veteran trees, rare fungi and invertebrates.

Every headstone has a story - visit the exhibition to discover some of them.
