The writer John Berger was born 100 years ago this year at 1 Filey Avenue, Stoke Newington – just a stone’s throw from Abney Park. The author of more than forty books, a Booker Prize-winner, filmmaker and artist, he went on to become one of Europe’s most formidable post-war intellectuals.

On this special evening, his lifetime friend and collaborator, Lisa Appignanesi – writer, former Chair of The Royal Society of Literature and the 2018 Man Booker International Prize – will be in conversation with writer and social historian Ken Worpole. They will reflect on Berger’s life and work which, rather than lose urgency over time, seem more radical than ever.

A bookstall will be available at this event, provided by Burley Fisher Books.

Abney Park Trust’s Radical Writers series celebrates those connected to Abney and Stoke Newington whose writing pushes creative bounds. It thinks about radicalism in many senses – old, new, cultural, political, social and beyond.
