The Meaning of Remembrance
Sat 12 Nov 2022 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM GMT
Abney Park Cemetery, N16 0LH
Description
On the eve of Remembrance Sunday this tour will discuss those buried and remembered at Abney in conflicts as long ago as Trafalgar and the American Civil War.
Turning to the Twentieth Century, it will highlight the unique role of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission in Britain's particular style of remembrance and those recalled in the recent centenary. Abney's rare memorial to the Civilian dead of Stoke Newington will widen the discussion of how and why we remember.
From the Stoke Newington High St entrance, please meet at the far end of the pedestrian walkway - where the path splits into three. (near the dark green cabins.)
Speaker Bio:
Alan Gartrell has given tours of Abney Park for many years now. His topics spread a huge range from the history of Hackney's MPs to Abney Park's missionary links. He very modestly says he is not a historian, just a few clicks ahead of everyone else on Wikipedia.
The tour will last around 60 mins.
Please arrive 5 minutes early for the 2pm start.
Please wear suitably sturdy footwear.
There are no toilet facilities available.
Please check your emails on the morning of the event - we may need to cancel at short notice if the weather is adverse.
