Abney and the Crimean War

After 40 years of European peace, the Crimean War was a shock to British Society. Explore this time with the people at Abney who fought in it, nursed at Balaclava, used it to expose the chaos of government processes or were inspired to fight for Peace.

The tour will also address the effect of the Crimean War on fellow Abney residents, such as Henry Richard MP who laboured ceaselessly as the Secretary of the Peace Society. It will also look at Betsi Cadwalladr, the Welsh Florence Nightingale, who trained as a nurse to the troops in her 60s.

Please enter at the Church Street entrance and follow the path on the left side. The meeting point is at the William Booth memorial, opposite the entry path. (The High Steet entrance will be closed during this time.)
