The theme of this first forum of the new academic year is Engaging students at the start of term.

We will be showcasing the work done at some of our member institutions, via short presentations, followed by opportunities for full-group and small-group discussions.

As usual, the forum will offer the opportunity to hear how other ALN member institutions have approached the start of term and to share your experiences in small group discussions.

Get involved!

We're looking for contributions outlining how institutions have engaged students at the start of term. The ideas below might help prompt you to think about what you could share with your ALN colleagues:

  • Did your Library team do something specific to support induction/Welcome Week?
  • Did colleagues from your front-line teams get involved in induction/welcome planning and delivery?
  • How did you use social media as part of your welcome/induction activity or messaging?
  • What were the key messages you shared with new students?
  • Did you use printed promotional material too (eg signage, posters, flyers etc) or is it all digital? If so, did you feel that digital signage worked as well as physical?
  • Have there been any discussions at your university about making any freebies or promotional items for students more sustainable or eco-friendly?

We don't want to be too prescriptive on how and what you can contribute but we have allocated roughly 30 minutes to this section and hope to hear the experiences of three different institutions during this time. You can do a short presentation of between 5 and 10 minutes outlining your experiences, choosing to use PowerPoint slides or other presentation technology, or you can simply speak for a few minutes.

If you are interested in presenting your institution's experience, please get in touch - academiclibrariesnorth@sconul.ac.uk.

The programme for the morning will be released nearer to the time.

About the Forums

The Frontline Forum is an online discussion and development space for teams working directly with students and users. The forums are an opportunity to share best practice, engage with other ALN activities and learn about different service models and delivery types offered by different universities. The forum is aimed at staff who work on frontline desks and provide the first line of support to students and other library users.
