Traditional corn dolly making workshop

Sat 4 Jul 2026 13:00 - 16:00 Acton Scott Heritage Farm, SY6 6QN

Step into a traditional rural craft and learn how to create your own corn dollies using natural straw.

In this relaxed, beginner-friendly workshop at Acton Scott Heritage Farm, you’ll be guided through the process of making a selection of classic designs — starting with simple forms and progressing to more intricate patterns as your confidence grows.

Alongside the practical making, you’ll hear about the history and folklore behind corn dollies, the heritage wheat used, and traditional harvesting methods.

What to expect

Working in a small, supportive group, you’ll learn how to prepare and handle straw before creating your own handmade designs.

You’ll be guided step-by-step through:

  • A Gentleman’s favour or Heart favour
  • A Straw Lady
  • A Five-straw spiral

Depending on the group, there may also be the opportunity to try more detailed designs such as a Welsh fan.

No experience is needed — just patience and a willingness to try something new.

A calm, hands-on craft

There’s something naturally absorbing about working with straw. The gentle rhythm of weaving and shaping makes this a calm, focused experience — a chance to slow down and enjoy making something by hand.

What you’ll take home

By the end of the workshop, you’ll have created several corn dollies (typically 3–4 pieces), along with printed information to support your learning and a bundle of straw to continue practicing at home.
