When our little bundles of joy come along, we all make decisions as families about how to balance work and home life. Whether someone stays at home most of the time, child-care comes into the picture while parents work, or relatives are relied upon for wraparound care outside school hours - there's a juggling act we all wrestle with.
When your child has ADHD or other disabling conditions that:
- impact their ability to attend school or childcare - whether due to anxiety issues or behaviour challenges,
- affect if and how family are willing or able to care for them when their understanding of ADHD is limited,
- come with unpredictable scheduling challenges like school refusals, summons to school for meetings, frequent healthcare appointments, or other risky behaviour like truanting and running away,
all those plates that are being carefully spun can come crashing down.
Parenting kids with ADHD can mean regularly having to reconsider those balancing decisions as you navigate your child's changing additional support needs.
In this session we'll talk about:
- understanding and accepting your child's strengths and limitations and what they mean for your lifestyle
- balancing care between multiple children in the household
- navigating workplace accommodations
- getting your child's other carers on board with their condition
- accessing financial support from benefits for children with disabilities
- changing or stepping back from your career
The session will be delivered by ADHD Scotland CEO Jill Dykes. Jill is a single co-parent with ADHD to 2 AuDHD teenage kids. . She's got years of lived experience of spinning these plates. She'll tell you about the ones she's kept up (and how), the ones she's dropped, and the one's she's carefully set down for another day.
