This module will take place on Wednesday 10th and 17th June from 4:00-7:00pm.

This one-day module (split across two evenings) is to study DMP practice and theory with reference to self-harm and suicide. This module can be taken by any DMP, but is a required module for those DMPs seeking UKCP accreditation.

This course is taught by Deborrah Baksh (she/her), a UKCP registered psychotherapist who works in private practice and with individuals and groups in community settings. She specialises in working with trauma, integrating EMDR therapy and somatic trauma informed practices into her approach; and is also a breathwork practitioner. Her particular interests are in social justice and nature; and has experience offering therapeutic support in a variety of settings including; outreach services to survivors post traumatic events, to witnesses at public inquiries and facilitating groups in nature.

Aims:

  • To study DMP practice and theory with reference to self-harm and suicide
  • To use the differing models as a critical tool to understand these therapeutic issues and to gain a deeper understanding of the value of DMP to them
  • Explore basic protocol of what to do in a safeguarding situation if working with a client who is at risk of self-harm or suicide

Learning Outcomes: 

On completion of this module, attendees should have a knowledge and understanding of:

  • Current approaches from the DMP community of practice in relation to self-harm and suicide
  • How to use both academic texts and research articles to develop knowledge and understanding of these issues
  • The social and cultural assumptions around suicide and self-harming behaviour
  • The actions of self-harm and suicide within the context of different client groups, social groups, and settings
  • 'Being with’ suicidal intent and deliberate harm in an embodied therapeutic process - the role of a DMP in the treatment and prevention of self-harm and suicide
  • Risk assessment and risk management when working with those presenting with suicidal and self-harming behaviours
  • The role of ‘self-care’ and ‘being able to care for oneself’, for the patient and therapist when working with suicide and self-harm

On completion of this module, attendees should be able to:

  • Read, reflect, analyse and evaluate the material from a DMP practice perspective
  • Critically consider pros and cons of the presented information and approaches towards working with clients who present with risk of self-harm or suicide and their relevance to your own clinical practice
  • Identify and use appropriate literature to support arguments
