Robert Frishman-

‘AMERICAN SUPERIORITY’ AT THE 1851 GREAT EXHIBITION: THE 2025 DINGWALL BELOE LECTURE REVISITED.

Among more than six hundred American exhibitors in London’s 1851 Great Exhibition’s Crystal Palace were forty that were featured in an 1852 lithograph and accompanying book to assert, in response to dismissive English criticism and mockery, that these products in particular demonstrated “American Superiority”. America earned five top Council Medal awards: one for an “Astronomical Clock & Spring Governor,” by Bond & Son of Boston, that was praised as “the most wonderful achievement of science which the world has seen since the days of Newton.Cheap Yankee clocks won no prizes, and were overshadowed by hundreds of refined British horological displays, but already were flooding the English Isles.

*Bob Frishman (bell-time@comcast.net) since 1980 has been a practitioner and scholar of horology.
