Ethical conduct lies at the heart of each
person’s relationship with the society in which
he/she lives. But how have we come to
understand what is the ‘right’ thing to do? From
Ancient Greece through to our post-Modern
present this question has been examined by
some of the greatest thinkers in Western
culture. This course with Cliff Gillam will survey
the major themes of thinking about ethics from
Socrates through to Michel Foucault, giving
participants an understanding of the different
ways moral philosophers have sought to define
what is ‘good’ – and why it matters to have a
definition. The course is for serious thinkers and
will involve some intensive discussion after an
introductory lecture by Cliff each day
