129: Wisdom QiGong

QiGong pronounced “Chee Gung” is an aspect of traditional Chinese Medicine that has been around for thousands of years. It is about energy flow along meridians, energy channels. The thought is that when a meridian is blocked, healing energy cannot flow.

QiGong attempts to unblock this healthy flow through the use of flowing movements, focused mind and breathing to return harmony to the body and mind. The practice consists of repetitive steps that include cleansing, strengthening, recharging, circulating and dispersing by using movements, directed focus, sounds and meditations.

The slow movements and meditative mind-state has been linked to more relaxed breathing, which in turn alters the sympathetic (stress & response) to the para-sympathetic (calm, relaxed state) restoring health, harmony and balance throughout the autonomic nervous and other systems in the body. Depression and anxiety are among some of the most common ailments where QiGong offers benefits for mental health. The good news is that medical findings are discovering that QiGong for mental health may be a viable solution.

Benefits overall from QiGong trickle through helping alleviate stress, which can reduce blood pressure and promote relaxation and good mood by giving a holiday to the constancy of active mind states.
