Three Sisters, a reimagining by Hannah Coyle after Anton Chekhov
A house fades, three voices rise and the world changes - almost imperceptibly.
In a small provincial town in Russia, suspended in time, three sisters - Olga, Masha and Irina - dream of escaping the banality of their lives and returning to Moscow, a city that shimmers in their memories as a place of freedom, youth, and promise. When a new military battalion commander arrives in town, the fragile contentment of this family unit splinters, triggering shockwaves for years to come. Around them, the world shifts quietly: the soldiers grow restless, the intellectuals lose faith, the family unravels and the house itself slowly empties of warmth.

Hannah Coyle’s reimagining of Chekhov’s Three Sisters brings a fresh and lyrical voice to the timeless story of familial ties, inspired by the writers of her Irish homeland, particularly Sean O’Casey, Thomas Kilroy and Brian Friel, who was known as the ‘Irish Chekhov’. Following a series of sold-out performances of the play as a staged reading in October 2024, Three Sisters is returning to Paris as a full production.
Through laughter, disappointment, and silence, this adaptation explores the shifting role of women, the weight of time and the fragile beauty of longing for another life.
“I have had some of my happiest days here, but everything must come to an end.”
