Best Practice Human Rights for Business
This session introduces the fundamentals of business and human rights: why it matters, what regulators and/or consumers expect, and how leading companies build it into daily operations. We'll look at the shifting regulatory environment, including mandatory human rights due diligence laws emerging across Europe and beyond, alongside established frameworks like the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and the OECD Guidelines. The session closes with a practical look at what best practice actually involves, from risk assessment to remedy, aimed at businesses just starting to engage with this work.
Presented by Aleta Moriarty, Director at the Centre for Sustainability. Aleta has held senior management roles with the United Nations and the World Bank, and her human rights work has been cited in journals including The Lancet and presented to the UN General Assembly. She holds a Master's degree from the University of Cambridge and has advised on human rights across sectors ranging from apparel and manufacturing to telecommunications, agriculture, and mining, including work in conflict zones and humanitarian settings.
Hosted as part of the Geelong Small Business Festival.
