Sudbury Oil Painting Workshops

Join artist Alexandra Oliver for a two-week programme of oil painting workshops at Gainsborough’s House, Sudbury. The first week will focus on still life painting, followed by landscape painting in the second week. Each course runs from 10am–1pm over two consecutive mornings and is suitable for beginners and those with some painting experience. 

For those who prefer a weekend option, there will also be a single-session workshop on Sunday, 10am-1pm.

Week 1: Still Life Painting

Tuesday 6th – Wednesday 7th October, 10am–1pm
Thursday 8th – Friday 9th October, 10am–1pm

Sunday 11th October, 10am-1pm

Explore the foundations of still life painting in oils, drawing on classical techniques the artist picked up from Florence during her training. Each course will work from a different still life arrangement, so the subject matter will vary between the two date options.

Week 2: Landscape Painting

Tuesday 13th – Wednesday 14th October, 10am–1pm
Thursday 15th – Friday 16th October, 10am–1pm

Sunday 18th October, 10am-1pm

Explore how to translate landscape into paint, focusing on composition, tone, colour, atmosphere and depth. Different landscape references will be used across the two courses, drawing on both observation and the traditions of landscape painting.

Each booking covers both mornings of your chosen two-day course, and you are welcome to book more than one course. For those who prefer a weekend option, there will also be a single-session workshop on Sunday. Alexandra will also be exhibiting a selection of her paintings at Gainsborough’s House throughout the fortnight, with the exhibition open to the public in the afternoons.

What’s included

All essential materials are provided, including oil paints, brushes, palettes and painting surfaces, along with demonstrations and individual guidance. Please wear clothes you don’t mind getting paint on or bring an apron.

About Alexandra

Alexandra Oliver is a Suffolk-based contemporary landscape painter working primarily in oils. She has trained at the Florence Academy of Art, with an MA from Sotheby’s Institute of Art, with a BA from the University of Leeds. Her practice is informed by a longstanding interest in British landscape painting and the Old Masters.
