In this beginner-friendly botanical drawing day, you will learn the skills you need to take the first steps into botanical drawing. We will begin with some drawing exercises to identify important parts of wild flowering plants and capture them on the page. We will focus on important plant families, identification methods, and field drawing techniques for quick information gathering. We will then have a short workshop on applying different art materials to the practice of plant drawing. The main focus will be on coloured pencils, inspired by the work of Wendy Hollender and Lara Gastinger. After lunch, you will bring together all you have learned to create a botanical journal page for your chosen plant in coloured pencil.
10:00 – 11:15: Drawing plants exercises, how to identify different plant parts and execute them in a drawing
11:15 - 12:30: Using coloured pencil and graphite in botanical drawings
12:30 – 1:15: Lunch break
1:15 – 4:00: Create a botanical journal page to celebrate your chosen plant.
Please do bring your own plant samples if there is something you particularly want to work on. Most of the tuition in the early part of the day will focus on wild plants, but you are welcome to bring samples from your garden or bring a house plant if you would like to work on that in the afternoon. Please bring real plants rather than photographs. A selection of wild plants will be available for you to choose from if not. All materials included.
