Every Tuesday and Saturday this fun event gives you inside knowledge about Lisbon with stories from the scandalous (sometimes bizarre!) Queer history of the city. The sociable half-day walking tour introduces you to a different side of Lisbon by visiting historic sites to hear stories from LGBTQ lives in the places where they happened. You'll hear heart-warming and dramatic anecdotes from queer history, meet fellow-travellers, and pass many of today's scene venues as we stroll through Lisbon's queer lives and loves - from the 16thCentury to today's active scene.
Highlights include - 17thCentury cruising sites, how the Inquisition dealt with gay men, lesbians battling 1960s censorship, stories from 19thCentury sex-work, why ‘Fado’ is a bit queer, how Lisbon Pride is a bit different, 1950s gay men dodging the police, bisexual jazz-legend Josephine Baker as a spy in WWII, an 18thCentury Trans love story, 19thCentury lesbian nuns, who were the ‘Two Fernandes’, how LGBT rights were established in Portugal, see where the first drag shows started, gay writers, queer pop stars, straight censors, disgraced politicians - all this and more until we end with a social drink. And we pass by Lisbon’s main bar and clubs scene to hear about opening times, suggestions for days/nights out, women’s spaces, cabaret/drag venues, LGBT rights and drug laws in Portugal, etc, etc.
And get your free copy of 'Alex's LONG LIST - Guide to LGBTQ Lisbon & Portugal' - 150 pages of updated inside knowledge, as a downloadable PDF and readable on mobiles as a FlipBook - (with a Gay Beach Guide, LGBTQ maps of Lisbon and all of Portugal, Women’s groups/venues, Lisbon on a budget, Trans-friendly spaces, Queer life across Portugal (Porto, Algarve, Other cities), etc, etc - everything you need to make the most of your time!).
