“Smart and scintillating. Red deftly conjures what most plays about artists don’t: the exhilaration of the act” – The New Yorker

Written by John Logan

Presented by Bristol International Theatre Workshop

A tour de force two-hander about American abstract painter Mark Rothko during the years he was under commission for his iconic Seagram Murals. Set entirely in his Lower Manhattan studio, circa 1958-59, Rothko and his eager young assistant mix paints, build frames, eat Chinese, prime canvases and listen to records, while engaging in heated debate about the conflict of art and tragedy of our own existence. Razor sharp dialogue, with an abstract touch, John Logan's modern classic is a compelling account of one of the 20th Century's greatest artists, whose struggle to accept his own success became his ultimate undoing.

Nominated for seven Olivier Awards (2009) and winner of six Tony Awards (2010), John Logan’s “RED” premiered at the Donmar Warehouse Theatre, London (3 December 2009).

Michael Grandage, Artistic Director.
