8pm Wednesday - Saturday - A Special Double Bill of One Act Plays

Back to the Alma after rave reviews for Bombshells by Joanna Murray Smith, Horfield Theatre Company are delighted to present two thought provoking one act plays.

The first is Failed Investments by award-winning playwright Lynn Brittney, whose other works include Dig For The Diggers and Have a Nice Day, both performed previously by Horfield Theatre Company.

Four women: Carol, Anne, Margaret and Judith are gathered for a residents' meeting at their block of flats. However, practical matters get lost in the welter of human issues which come to the boil during the course of the evening. Anne is getting a divorce, Margaret’s son has just revealed that he is gay, Judith has a domineering husband and Carol is far from pleased to be ‘outed’ as a lesbian. All four women are united in their condemnation of the male orientated society, which makes all their lives so hard. All agree to set about redressing the balance. A moving comic drama.

The second, Lucy in the Sky by Tony Layton, won the award for the Best One Act Play (all female cast) at the Drama Association of Wales Port Macquarie one act festival. It deals with the topical subject of homelessness.

On a cold Winter’s night 3 women seek shelter at a hostel for the homeless. Each has a different reason for being there. Alexia, is young and pregnant following a rape, Meg has wreaked revenge on a brutal husband and is in self imposed exile. With Wendy, all it took to become an outcast, was one impulsive act, which she regrets forever.

About the Company:

In 1995, a group of around 80 people, began work on a ‘one off’ production of the 1970s hit musical ‘Godspell’. This production received excellent reviews. The group were invited to perform at Bristol Cathedral, after which, high levels of enthusiasm and commitment remained with many members of the original cast and production team and thus Horfield Theatre Company was formed.

We aim to stage two productions a year and have successfully performed a wide range of musicals, including Cabaret, full length and one act plays, including Calendar Girls in October 2012. In addition, our members have enjoyed variety shows, youth productions, murder mystery evenings, quizzes and play readings. We have staged productions at a number of venues, including The Redgrave Theatre, Q.E.H Theatre, Wells Cathedral and The Olympus Theatre Wise Campus. This will be our third performance at The Alma Tavern Theatre.
