4.30pm Sunday

1967, England. It’s rarely just one thing that keeps us awake at night.

After weeks of sleeplessness Christian’s mother, Irene, sends him to the doctor’s. A cure is promised. What neither realises is that the cure is not for his insomnia but for his homosexuality, and this cure is electric shock therapy. When memory and certainty are both shattered, piecing a life back together again becomes fraught.

SHOCK was written to combat the frightening trends that are resurfacing, where parts of society – all over the globe – are slipping back into an incomprehensible prejudice against the LGBTQ+ community. This is the real-life story of Christian - alongside loved ones and strangers alike - and the treatment that shattered his life into pieces.

With a world falling apart around us, the only way we can truly find solutions to adapt is from a place of equality. Love is our essential tool for survival.

This performance is a special rehearsed reading of the play ‘SHOCK’ by Tini as part of the future development of the show.

About the Company:

FireKeg Productions is a new theatre company formed by Tini and Nicholas Downton-Cooper in 2024. They believe theatre should be inclusive, equitable and give voice to those who can’t use theirs.

Based in Bristol and Swindon, FireKeg aims to tell stories of those who are underrepresented. The power of theatre is its ability to force us to ask questions about how we become better societally. If our stories are about us all, then they should include us all.

‘SHOCK’ is their first production; with a backsliding of LGBTQ+ rights and the current focus on society’s mental health, the relevance and timeliness of this story is its power.

All tickets include a £1 admin charge
