What do you do when your ex-situationship appears after six years in prison for killing her sister’s husband?

You invite her and all your friends over and hope for the best, right?

A cosy get together between a tight-knit group takes a turn when an old friend shows up after six years in prison. The crime? Murdering her sister's abusive husband.

As the play unfolds, the characters grapple with their past and their relationships, prompting deeper thought on the devastating impacts of domestic violence, the complexity of sisterly love, uniqueness of female community, and the intricacies of queer relationships. Sunk Into the Earth is deeply honest in confronting the abyss inside us all. Jagged and tender, dark and light, the play investigates just how far we’ll go for the deep bonds that connect and entangle us.

Variant Pulse Theatre are a group of emerging artists representing five cultures with their origins at East 15 Acting School. Initially written by Charlotte Ritter, the play has been workshopped and developed by the company over the past year.

Praise for Variant Pulse Theatre

“Ritter successfully marries light and dark as the play traverses difficult topics such as loss, abuse and co-dependence with surprising humour and sensitivity.” A Young(ish) Perspective

“Sharply written, a witty, intelligent, engaging and moving piece of theatre ... performed with great style and skill by a fantastic ensemble cast.” Robin Sneller, East 15 Acting School

“Funny and poignant, but also bold and provocative” Daniel York Loh, award-winning former associate artistic director of Kakilang
