Hutch
Three vulnerable people, sharing an attic divided into ‘hutches’, eke out a meek existence, but their landlord’s plans force them to choose between surrender or resistance.
Back in its home town for the first time in three years, Hutch has been reimagined by director, Sarah Curwen, and is funnier than ever.
Hutch is a comedy examining the injustices and absurdities of the current housing crisis and, in particular, ‘sex for rent’. The play’s serious spine conveys the everyday struggles of those living in the realm of the rogue landlord.
There are three main characters: the mysterious new tenant, Debbie, a teenage runaway; Svenya, a sex chatline operator who is in hiding; and Bob who works in the local library and is an ex-convict.
When the landlord hatches a plan to exploit Debbie, the others have to decide whether to make a stand or look the other way.
Audience reactions:
“Hutch was superb: hard-hitting, but also very funny; theatrically innovative and very topical. The three main characters were very likeable and their humanity helped shine a light on our disgraceful housing crisis and those "left behind".”
“Just ... to say how much I enjoyed Hutch - it is a great set up and really well plotted + v funny, sharp writing… all the performances were brilliant. It played a bit like a modern fairy tale ...”
"Full of pathos, comedy and compassion. Not to mention three gripping, very three-dimensional, well-drawn characters about who we came to care a lot."
“I enjoyed every minute of the play. It was funny, moving and conveyed a powerful message.”
“Just brilliant"
"Excellent”
“I would thoroughly recommend seeing this … you will leave with a smile.” Gin & Theatre blog.
