Bombshells consists of six monologues made famous by Caroline O'Connor, exposing women balancing their inner and outer lives with humour and often desperate cunning. The scripts are brilliant, funny and perceptive, the characters range in age from a feisty teenager to a 64-year-old widow yearning for the unexpected.
The playwright describes the six characters as women who struggle, 'sometimes hilariously, sometimes tragically, to bridge the chasm between the wilderness of their inner worlds and the demands of their outer worlds' (Murray-Smith, 2004).
A mother who tells the story of her non-stop day in an anguished internal monologue; A cactus lover bravely attempting to rise above her relationship crisis; A cabaret singer who's had her fair share of personal problems. All of the women depicted are relatable, and combined they show the depth of the female experience.

Horfield Theatre Company
In September 1995 around 80 people from the Horfield area began work on a 'one off' production of the hit 70s musical, 'Godspell'. In February 1996 Horfield Parish Productions’ cast of 27 performed to packed houses and received sparkling reviews. Following an invitation, the group gave its final performance of 'Godspell' at Bristol Cathedral in September 1996. However, high levels of energy and commitment remained with many members of the original cast and production team and Horfield Theatre Company was formed.
We are excited to be at The Alma Theatre once again to perform Bombshells written by contemporary Australian playwright Joanna Murray-Smith whose plays have been performed around the world and include the award-winning Honour, Rapture and Female of the Species, which was performed by Horfield Theatre Company in 2017. Honour has been produced in over two dozen countries, including productions on Broadway, the National Theatre in London and the West End. Both Honour and Rapture won the Victorian Premier's Literary Award for Best Play. In 2000 Joanna was awarded a Commonwealth Medal for Services to Playwriting.

The Alma Theatre has been serving the community for 25 years and has never been the recipient of ACE or other funding. Our theatre manager started maternity leave as the pandemic hit and as a result we missed all opportunities for additional arts council support. We have been offering reduced rates, preferential box office splits and extended promo support to aid the recovery from the past year and a half. Your help will enable us to continue bringing fantastic stories to your local theatre. 50% of your donation will go to the Alma Theatre, and 50% to our inhouse company, Schoolhouse Productions.
