“Why would I want to watch a show about MENSTRUATION?!”
“Are you serious?”
“That’s disgusting!”

Are some of the reactions I’ve witnessed whilst talking to people, about my show.  So WHY did I choose to write it?

My 2019 show, ‘Smashing (the heteropatriarchy)’, included a scene about a ‘period toolbelt’ (which contained everything a bleeder could possibly need) and a cabaret piece about moon cups.  Whilst writing the section about menstruation, I unearthed a multitude of research about attitudes to periods, and their lacklustre presence in popular culture. My brain took over and proceeded to research and write a whole show!

Why you should see the show:
- Half the population bleeds; let’s smash the shame around periods.
- Talking about periods should be a normal part of everyday conversation, just as socially acceptable as saying ‘I’m busting for a wee!’
- Childbirth in all its stages, from conception, to pregnancy and birth is widely documented in TV and film. Why not menstruation?

What to expect:
- Be taken on a whistle-stop tour back through history, witnessing the wide range of menstrual products used since the Ancient Greeks.
- Teenage diary extracts presented in a spoken-word format, sharing my period disaster stories!
- Meet comedy character and social media influencer Adriana Mole, with vulva-care tips, a plenty.
- Take part in a ‘movie rating’ session, where we watch film extracts (yes, they do exist!) which reference menstruation.
- Play ‘Celebrate or Denigrate?’ as you judge the impact of each clip.
- Enjoy a top secret treat, at the end of the show.

All purchases for show at the Alma now have a suggested donation to the theatre and inhouse company of £2.00

You can remove this donation by changing the amount to £0.00, but please do consider offering your generosity to help us continue to offer great theatre at affordable prices.

The Alma Theatre has been serving the community for 25 years and has never been the recipient of ACE or other funding. Our theatre manager started maternity leave as the pandemic hit and as a result we missed all opportunities for additional arts council support. We have been offering reduced rates, preferential box office splits and extended promo support to aid the recovery from the past year and a half. Your help will enable us to continue bringing fantastic stories to your local theatre. 50% of your donation will go to the Alma Theatre, and 50% to our inhouse company, Schoolhouse Productions.
