Apradhini: Women Without Men
‘Apradhini’ by ‘Shivani’ Gaura Pant, is a collection of stories of five women whom the author encounters when she visits a women’s prison for a cultural event in Northern India.
Guilty of offences including armed robbery, dacoity and murder, the women have been incarcerated for life. Beaten, abused and exploited by society, it is when the women finally decide to free themselves that they are punished. Were their crimes heartless violations of justice or responses to untenable circumstances? These are stories that are often left untold because they are about women not just on the wrong side of the abhorrent class and caste divide that still exists in India, but also on the wrong side of the law.
The play includes Indian folk song, and devised movement - devices employed to transport the audience to the time and place where these stories unfolded.
