Session descriptions
Cents and Sensibility: Practical approaches to running a lean in-house trademark team
Many attorneys working in law firms don't realize that in-house legal teams often work with incredibly tight budgets. In this panel, Warner Music Group attorney Sofya Nadgorny will lead Shama Elliott (of PricewaterhouseCoopers), Stacey Foltz Stark (of Estée Lauder, previously of WeWork), and Stephanie Grenald (recently of Amazon and previously of Hinduja) in a discussion about innovative strategies for cost-effective trademark management. The panel will discuss how in-house teams can optimize costs while maintaining the integrity and strength of their brands' trademarks. They'll also address how attorneys at firms can demonstrate their value and help in-house teams reduce costs. In particular, the panel will discuss:
- Implementing insightful strategies for reducing trademark management costs
- Streamlining trademark application and maintenance processes
- Using technology to reduce costs and increase efficiency
- Balancing robust brand protection with budget constraints
- Ensuring your firm's services are valuable to lean in-house teams
The AI Brandwagon: Why AI is becoming so popular for trademark practice
With the increasing influence of AI on our daily lives, it naturally seeps into the field of trademarks as well. We can see the impact of the proliferation of AI technology on the laws, rights, and regulations surrounding the lifecycle of trademarks, with more changes seeming to pop up every day. As AI technology evolves and laws and ethical standards adapt to keep up, trademark attorneys are left to wonder what the technology means and how it will impact their work. In this panel, Matt Rubin of Corsearch will moderate a discussion between trademark attorneys Sam Kilb and Jessica Neer McDonald. The three will discuss:
- The history of AI in trademarks
- Creation, clearance and protection of trademarks using AI
- Ethical concerns when using AI in trademarks
- The impact of AI technology on the trademark industry
- Predictions about the future of AI technology
AI on the Prize: Ethical considerations for emerging technologies
When implemented correctly, emerging technologies have the potential to revolutionize your trademark practice and boost your productivity. However, these tools are not without risks, and if you don't properly oversee their use and products, they can cost you greatly. In this presentation, former USPTO OED attorney Emil Ali will explain the ethical issues to consider when using technology, including AI, and give you a framework for evaluating tools' ethical compliance. In particular, he'll discuss:
- Real-world examples of ethical concerns stemming from the use of emerging technologies
- Existing and proposed legal frameworks that govern the use of AI in trademark law
- Best practices for evaluating and utilizing emerging technologies in your legal practice
