Course Description:
This 6-week course is led by Amanda Baker and Abi Grant.
A good routine will make you stand out. A great routine, you’re inside of it, there’s a reason you’re telling it, it fits you, sounds like you, and audiences remember a line or two and at least one joke. A motherfucking awesome routine sounds like you and no one else, people remember sections of it, if not the whole thing with your wording. Other comics name-check you (“They’ve got this brilliant routine, have you seen it?”) even if they don’t like you.
Routines allow you to play with layers of meaning, revealing who YOU are, your background, contradictions, falsities, and foibles, which means the better your routines, the stronger your connection to your audience
You know your jokes and how they work.
You know what a good set-up does and what it gives you.
You know what punchlines are - and are not - and how to multiply them.
You know the function of developments and what fun comic devices can be.
You know the difference between a long-form and a compound joke.
You know why you need to finish your jokes
You know you’ve got funny bones
It was hard at first, but you stuck with it.
Well done.
