The storied Amateur Comedy Club will host a special live taping of the Person Place Thing show, recorded for broadcast on public radio. The acclaimed program, created and hosted by Emmy Award–winning writer Randy Cohen, is known for its distinctive format—inviting guests to speak about a person, a place, and a thing of particular meaning—revealing character through passion rather than résumé.

The evening’s guest, Dr. Herb Gould, promises to be especially memorable. A pioneering ophthalmological surgeon credited with developing the modern method of cataract removal, Dr. Gould has earned widespread recognition in the medical field. He is also an Emmy Award recipient, a rare distinction that reflects his unique intersections with media and storytelling. Yet his life extends far beyond the operating room. He is an accomplished Shakespearean actor, a regular presence at the Amateur Comedy Club, and a witty raconteur with a gift for performance.

At 96, Dr. Gould brings remarkable vitality, charm, and a lifetime of extraordinary experiences—from medicine to stage to unexpected cultural honors, including a prize at the Cannes Film Festival. With deep roots in show business—his godfather was Al Jolson, and his father performed with Harry Lauder’s famed troupe—his story bridges generations of art and science.

This promises to be an evening of insight, humor, and unforgettable storytelling.

A reception with refreshments in the club’s Green Room will follow the approximate hour-long program.

Support for this event has been provided through the generosity of Thomas Campbell Jackson.
