AURA on Screen

As part of AURA on Screen, AMA Venezia presents Derek Jarman’s Blue (1993).

An uninterrupted field of blue fills the screen for the duration of the film. With the conventional moving image stripped away, voices, music and sound construct a deeply personal meditation on perception, memory, love, illness and mortality.

Made during the final years of Jarman’s life, as he was gradually losing his sight, Blue transforms the absence of the visible image into the very substance of the film.

Continuing AURA on Screen’s exploration of the idea of the afterimage, the screening asks what remains when there is almost nothing left to see: how an image can persist through voice, memory and perception.

Per il secondo appuntamento di AURA on Screen, AMA Venezia presenta Blue (1993), l’ultimo lungometraggio di Derek Jarman.

Un campo blu ininterrotto occupa lo schermo per l’intera durata del film. Sottratta l’immagine cinematografica convenzionale, sono le voci, la musica e i suoni a costruire una riflessione profondamente personale sulla percezione, la memoria, l’amore, la malattia e la mortalità.

Realizzato nell’ultimo periodo della vita di Jarman, mentre stava progressivamente perdendo la vista, Blue trasforma l’assenza dell’immagine visibile nella materia stessa del film.

Proseguendo la ricerca di AURA on Screen attorno all’idea di afterimage, la proiezione interroga ciò che rimane quando non c’è quasi più nulla da vedere: il modo in cui un’immagine può persistere attraverso la voce, la memoria e la percezione.
