Defending protest in Peru
Mon 11 Nov 2024 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Description
When social protests erupted in Peru between December 2022 and March 2023, the government resorted to repression in response, committing gross human rights violations including possible extrajudicial executions. 50 people were killed and more than 1400 were injured. Most of those killed were indigenous people from Peru's southern Andean regions. Amnesty has identified that possible responsibility for these crimes under international law extends to the highest levels of the Peruvian government including the President. Nearly two years since the protests began, only limited progress has been made into investigation of those responsible. Yovana Mendoza Huarancca, Vice-President of the Ayacucho Victims Association, and Mario Iquita Chambi, Representative of the Juliaca Victims Association, will talk about the search for justice for those who were killed or seriously injured and for their families.
